Local Attractions and Places of Interest

The Lake

Often referred to as the Hungarian 'Sea', with a surface area of 600 sq km, Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe. In comparison with other European lakes it is extremely clean and well maintained, and with an average water temperature of 25°C the lake is ideal for bathing and swimming, as well as sailing, fishing, and other watersports.

Balatonfoldvar has several beaches (strands) where tourists and locals can spend their day relaxing in the sun, bathing in the lake, enjoying the sports facilities, and eating and drinking in the adjoining cafe's and restaurants. Set in tree-lined surroundings, one of the ‘free’ strand is conveniently located at the end of our street, just 3 minutes walk from the guest house.

The Harbour

Balatonfoldvar has the largest and finest harbour on Lake Balaton. Hosting some of the most beautiful yachts on the lake, the harbour is the perfect place to relax in the numerous cafe’s and restaurants and watch the world go by.

There are also many pleasure boat trips that leave the harbour on a regular basis during the summer months so why not take a scenic trip around the lake and indulge yourself with some wine tasting on board or take a sunset trip with a barbeque dinner to round off the day?

The Tihany Peninsula

Set on a hilly peninsula which juts out 5km into the lake, Tihany is famous for its Benedictine Abbey which was founded in 1055. Still functioning as an abbey, the church is well known for its echo. The last Habsburg Emperor of Austria Charles I was also held prisoner here.

Balatonfoldvar is within easy reach of Szantod which is the gateway to the north side of Lake Balaton, with the 10 minute ferry crossing to the tip of the Tihany peninsula leaving every half an hour.

The centre of Tihany, with its traditional restaurants, cafe's and shops is also famous for its breathtaking views over the lake.

Parks, Gardens and the Promenade

With its reputation for being one of the most well-kept resorts in the Balaton, Balatonfoldvar is renowned for its beautiful parks and gardens. The town is a previous winner of the “most floral town in Hungary” and is regularly among the annual prize winners.

The tree-lined Kvassay Promenade runs along the length of the shoreline, connecting the centre of the town with its bars, restaurants and local amenities to the harbour and free beaches.

Koroshegy

Built in 1640, this lovely village just outside Balatonfoldvar boasts a Gothic Church which hosts summer concerts.
